The benefits of losing weight
As a result of weight loss, many of the diseases associated with obesity improve or are cured. In particular, the beneficial effects are seen in:
- Metabolic diseases (type 2 diabetes, hyperinsulinism, dyslipidemia). Blood glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels normalize, allowing for the interruption or reduction of therapies. The risk of cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism) is halved, as is the risk of certain cancers (colon), which is increased by excess insulin.
- Diseases caused by the overload of excess fat tissue (heart failure, respiratory failure, snoring and sleep apnea, severe joint diseases of the lower limbs, venous insufficiency in the lower limbs).
- Female infertility: young women are able to conceive and can have a pregnancy without weight-related risks.
- Breast cancer incidence during menopause is higher in women with obesity: bariatric surgery reduces this risk.
- Fatty liver disease (fat infiltration of the liver), which in its more severe forms can lead to cirrhosis and liver cancer.
- There is also an increase in self-esteem and improved acceptance of one’s body shape, with positive consequences for social, emotional, and professional life.
