Dr. GIUSEPPE MARIA MARINARI
Since 1991, I have been a specialist in general surgery and, since 1995, in nutrition science. I began my career as a bariatric surgeon in 1987, and since then, I have personally performed over 8,000 bariatric procedures, primarily Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass, and Biliopancreatic Diversion. Each year, I also perform many revision surgeries, where one bariatric procedure is converted into another, or the original function and anatomy of the digestive tract are fully or partially restored. I have international experience and am one of the leading bariatric surgeons in Italy. Since 2012, I have focused on implementing a high-volume center with the adoption of an innovative protocol called Enhanced Recovery After Bariatric Surgery (ERABS). This protocol ensures the greatest benefits for the patient, promotes quick healing, and allows an early return to daily activities, which is why it has received an extremely high approval rate. Since 2017, ERABS has allowed our center to safely perform over 1,000 surgeries per year (except for the worst year, 2020, due to COVID), reaching over 1,500 procedures in 2022.
Obesity is a complex condition that includes a series of associated diseases called comorbidities, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Therefore, the role of a bariatric surgeon is multidisciplinary and involves understanding (and sometimes treating) comorbidities in addition to performing surgeries. I initially chose to become a bariatric surgeon because it was a new and growing field, but over time I came to appreciate its multi-specialist aspect. Now, I love helping people transform their lives.
